Evolution of 3D techniques

In 2006 the trend shows that there is a need for three dimensional representation, the games industry, the film industry and the many techniques of the digital imagery help each other in the understanding and also production of new tools. The three D scanning devices used for forming or measuring is slowly coming to be used by some segment of the advertising market. In this way the research in all 3D aspects gets more and more founding. But the path to reach the market is getting for the first time in Holography a matter of specialists. The company Rayvel Holographics is the first one to propose its business competence in marketing and development to bring the idea of a holographic product to the customers. Up to now J. Ciaudelli mentioned several successful stories for fining technical applications and customers for technical innovations, as well as development of new products for specific customers, for example, special display unit for advertising. They used fading away technique to reduce the problem of narrow perspective angle. They also worked out a specific holographic kit, easy, educational and attractive for schools which they proposed at an affordable price of US$ 1995to US$ 2995 a piece.

Lasershow and Holographic Laboratory: The laser is like a brush, you can create everything.

New Emulsion - The experience of Hans B Bjelkhagen in Optic Technium who initiated the idea and the next centre for Laser Photonics in England shows the necessity of producing easier and faster varieties of products. The Silver Cross, a 2 Years project supported by the European Community put together a number of specialists from many different countries to find high resolution efficiency emulsion for colour in Display holography. Fuji Film also started to hear from the need of its customers, instead of producing what they wanted to. After a survey, their decided to developed a new film for display holography, which is probably just a step into the new development of all kind of 3-D visual display including holographic screen for 3-D projection. The test which they presented through the contribution of Holographic North was certainly showing a bright result. These past 2 years, China also developed and sale emulsion for display holography sold at very good price by Intergraf very much used by schools and hobby holographers.

Research Large viewing angle projection for 3-D display

.A group of Japanese researchers used to developed an electro-holographic display using a virtual image. But the viewing area was too small because the pixel size of the LCD was not so small. Now, the group has just developed a projection type electro-holographic display system. For projection type holography [1] a 3-D screen had to be used in order to project the reconstructed image clearly and for having a wide viewing angle . they produced an electro-holographic display system using a mist 3-D screen. But the reconstructed image with a mist 3-D screen flickered due to gravity and air flow. Finally they reduced the flickering problem by using a flow controlled nozzle. Through this experiment, it was possible to obtain a considerably high contrast 3-D moving image and to achieve a viewing area of more than 30 °. - Koki Sato a , Kunihiko Takano from Shonan Institute of Technology,Nishikaigan, Tsujido, Fujisawa, Kanagawa, And Tokyo Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering, Minamisenjyu, Arakawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan

Digital Holography

The most spectacular success of research and development of these past two years is probably the capacity to print holographic dots, to be used for large format true color display hologram. Several version already exists. The holoPrinter patented by David Ratcliff and XYZ inc. which can print large format in full color as well as with animation. Although the printing process is still slow the technology opens interest to new potential customers and especially all those waiting for having true colors 3D printed visualization in large format. In Germany, SYN 4D developed the product for end customers of the Europeans market while XYZ is concentrating on the Digital 3-D scanning system to be used for the promotion of the film industry.

It would be interesting to see the orientation of these companies as Prestige International (PSI) which bought two holoprinters in France just announced its Bankruptcy. .. After one year attempt and 3 millions € gone,. Philippe Renault, the owner PSI a specialist of lenticular business had to stop. His confidential contract with XYZ did not give him much choice to ask for the support of holographers to solve the technical problem he apparently had with the running of the printing process. Holography is a complex field which needs many different expertise, may it be in optics, in mechanics, in photography, in design , in aesthetic, in display, in marketing, and of course in business.

Zebra Imaging which also succeeds this year in producing a working new digital recording system with vertical and horizontal parallax including full colour is presently resuming its application to 3-D geographic mapping. The compamy assure its market by contracting with the army. Zebra is continuing research and concentrates on the American market.

New technique

Some techniques contributed to radical social and cultural mutation: We need more time to see which ones will do so.

Small individual computer generated Holograms produced in one second

S Noehte from TesaScribos GmbH in Germany is proposing that CGHs can also be used as a small data carrier and security hologram calculated as Fourier holograms using a fast algorithm. The calculation is optimized for contrast of the readout pattern and recognition of machine readable information by using dedicated software, the information being coded in a holographic pattern. The manufacturing process is described by an ultra fast lithographic system, writing each hologram in one second with an accuracy of 100 nanometres on polymeric foils that do not need any chemical processing. Interesting is that with this technique each hologram is written individually. The reading of information is possible either just with light reconstruction or through machine readable information. The main application is a smart data carrier for product tracing and fraud protection or brand protection. The Holospot R technology can also be used in bigger individual portraits for identification documents.

Still coming

Development of goggles-free 3D display systems in progress. A variety of applications, such as entertainment, medical, design and engineering, can significantly benefit from the development of a goggles-free 3D imaging system. Although a number of such systems (spatially multiplexed, volumetric, autostereoscopic and electro-holography) have been suggested, practically examined and modelled, their practical implementation is far from complete, mostly due to unsatisfactory imaging quality. Recent technological advances, both with hardware and data processing software, open a new perspective in the development of advanced non-goggles based 3D displays. Vladimir B. Markov a , Stephen A. Kupiec a , Adrian R. L. Travis b , Gurdial S. Saini c from Texas Instrument and Metrolaser Inc approach the development of goggles-free 3D display systems discussing their initial results in the development with an improved image quality and increased refresh rate based on the new concepts, namely, temporally multiplexing and point-aspect. Their paper presents a thorough review of the current state-of-the-art of these two techniques and a perspective in their further practical engineering and realization.
